Perception of flood risks in Praia City (Cabo Verde)

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to deal with environmental threats, floods and its perception in Praia's city (Cape Verde), showing territory aspects that has to do with dangerous processes , vulnerabilities existing as well as the awareness of this threats. Yet, this paper, could help having a better knowledge of the urban risks and support in making decisions and in risks management of public policies. The methodology used focused on bibliographic and documentary research about the topic and the area of study, beyond the analysis of cartographic, statistical, data and questionnaire. From the study of the risks' perception by the resident population in the dangerous areas, it was noticed that, people are aware of the risks they are exposed to, however, the socio-economic conditions and low income don't allow them to choose a safe place to live.
