Abstract

Remote sensing of the surface has been successfully used to detect vegetation dynamics. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze the dynamics of vegetation changes due to climatic variations, in the municipality of Belo Jardim, located in the Pernambuco state. The indices used were the SAVI (Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index) and the surface albedo. These indices were related to the water balance of the region for a better analysis. Four images were used, two from the rainy season and two from the dry season. By correlating these indices with climatological data, the influence of these indices on vegetation development, which presented responses to these climatic variations, was verified. In the period of 1998 and 2004, in the sparse vegetation, dry period, there was a greater increase of more than five times of area, jumping from 10.96% to 56.24% of the municipality of Belo Jardim. The sparse vegetation suffered a very large reduction, falling from 74.06% to 28.66%. The data suggest a partial maintenance in the aspect of the vegetation in the rainy season and a strong decrease for the dry period.
