Resumen

BSTRACT

Since the Agricultural or Neolithic Revolution, about ten thousand years ago, until recent advances in biotechnology and genetic engineering, many changes have taken place in the ways of producing in agricultural spaces. This search for technical innovations has generally been, and still is, motivated both by demographic growth and by economic and political motivations. Today, we are witnessing a defense of transgenic seeds with arguments similar to those that went through the process of agricultural modernization, especially in the Green Revolution phase, which are the need to increase productivity, to produce more food to fight hunger, in a sustainable way. This article addresses transgenic crops and problematizes the discourse of sustainability accompanied by them; discusses the relationship between climate change and monoculture-based agricultural models; and lastly presents an overview of these crops in countries participating in the Network of Environmental Studies of Portuguese Speaking Countries (ROAR): Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique and Portugal. This article is based on a literature survey, including news and articles found on the Internet and data published in the latest report of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA).
