TEACHING OF GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION:
A THEORETICAL DISCUSSION

Geography studies have different approaches and diverse study objects and are carried out in school and/or university units and are essential for the formation of citizenship. Linked to this, environmental education becomes essential, because it is not restricted to a science or personal attitude, on the contrary, it must be considered in a holistic perspective and as an individual and collective attitude. In this approach, the general objective was to discuss some theoretical contributions on the Teaching of Geography and Environmental Education while real possibilities for improving the relationship between society and nature. Environmental education cannot and should not be considered only as a seasonal and/or temporary activity. In fact, it must be an attitude to be internalized by humans throughtout life. When thinking about this dimension, Geography and especially the teaching of Geography, has a fundamental role, in view of having the planet Earth as object of study in its broadest conception. In this context, it was concluded that Geography and, especially the teaching of Geography, has significant importance for the understanding of fundamental concepts of science, that is, the relationship between society and nature. In addition, the discussion on Environmental Education is a constant posture in Geography classes due to the interaction between these sciences.
